- Resilience Peace and Stability (RPS): Empowering Youth and Women for a Greener Future: Pamoja Hosts Entrepreneurship and Climate Security Training in Kisumu County. | Pamoja English
< Back Resilience Peace and Stability (RPS): Empowering Youth and Women for a Greener Future: Pamoja Hosts Entrepreneurship and Climate Security Training in Kisumu County. Location Kisumu County Location Climate Resilience and Skills and Enterprise Development Kisumu County, Kenya – In a step toward fostering resilience, promoting peace, and creating sustainable livelihoods, Pamoja for Transformation , under the Resilience Peace and Stability (RPS) Program , recently hosted a transformative three-day training on Entrepreneurship and Climate Security . The event, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark in Kenya through Act Change Transform, brought together women and youth-led enterprises in Kisumu County to address climate change risks, unlock green opportunities, and promote peaceful coexistence. Training Highlights: Building Skills for a Sustainable Future The training aimed to equip participants with practical skills and knowledge to manage and adapt to the growing challenges posed by climate change. Key focus areas included: 🔹 Entrepreneurship Development: Participants learned how to establish and sustain environmentally friendly businesses that align with global green economy trends. From renewable energy ventures to waste management solutions, the training highlighted innovative ways to turn climate challenges into economic opportunities. 🔹 Climate Risk Management: Through interactive sessions, attendees gained insights into identifying and mitigating climate-induced vulnerabilities. This knowledge is crucial for building resilient communities that can withstand environmental shocks and stresses. 🔹 Green Opportunities for Youth: A dedicated Youth Sensitization Forum explored emerging green opportunities in sectors such as solar energy, e-mobility, biogas, and sustainable agriculture. The forum inspired young people to pursue careers and entrepreneurship in these fields while contributing to climate action. Addressing Climate-Induced Conflicts Kisumu County, like many regions in Kenya, faces challenges related to climate-induced conflicts over resources such as water, arable land, and pasture. These tensions often exacerbate social instability and contribute to violent behavior among youth. By addressing the root causes of these conflicts, the training sought to reduce the pull and push factors that drive young people toward violence. Through dialogue and capacity-building, participants were encouraged to adopt non-violent approaches to resolving disputes and advocate for equitable resource distribution within their communities. Creating Employment Opportunities for Youth One of the program’s primary goals is to create meaningful employment opportunities for youth in Kisumu County. By integrating entrepreneurship with climate action, the initiative empowers young people to become job creators rather than job seekers. Participants left the training equipped with actionable ideas to launch or scale their businesses, contributing to both economic growth and environmental sustainability. Why This Matters Climate change is not just an environmental issue, it is a social, economic, and security challenge. By targeting women and youth, who are disproportionately affected by climate risks, this initiative ensures that no one is left behind in the transition to a greener future. Moreover, empowering women and youth is key to achieving lasting peace and stability in Kisumu County. Our Projects Our Programs Skills and Enterprise Development The program's primary goal is to enhance the economic productivity of disadvantaged women and youth-led micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through various interventions. These interventions include skills development, wealth creation, and promoting resilience and adaptation. To achieve this, the program provides a comprehensive range of support to disadvantaged women and youth. This support includes technical skills training, soft skills development, entrepreneurship knowledge, and assistance with market and financial linkages. By equipping them with these capacities, the program aims to enhance their ability to generate income, create employment opportunities, and support sustainable livelihoods. Learn More Climate Change Resilience Program The programme is premised on an integrated approach that promotes adaptation towards livelihood promotion. the program focuses on value chain development in circular economy, developing capacities of women and youth led SME’s. The program operates at the nexus between policy and action for resilience building and innovation within the green and blue economy value chains. Further, the program integrates and promotes renewable energy technologies in order to foster economic growth, enhance access to resources, affordability, availability towards food security and job opportunities while conserving the natural ecosystem. The program acknowledges that depletion of the natural ecosystem and the climatic changes factors not only disrupts human livelihoods, but also breeds conflicts arising from unsustainable utilization of the environment and it’s attendant resources. Learn More Peace and Governance The overall aim of this program is to contribute to the existence and operationalization of governance framework and practices that safeguard justice, equity, rule of law, inclusivity, cohesion and civic participation. Through the program, we engage in policy influencing, as well as facilitate improved civic engagements and access to justice. This program acts as the fulcrum and equilibrium that provides the impetus and lense for supporting the development and implementation of the climate change and SED programs. The program is premised on the philosophy that; all development needs are conflict context, therefore conscious intergration of peace and development through climate change and SED programming is critical. Interventions are entrenched within the governance structure at the community county and national levels since our interventions compliment and support Government development agenda. Learn More

- Reconnecting to my business dream through development partnership
The knowledge acquired from the training is helping me to better plan, set goals for my business and engage with my customers effectively. Reconnecting to my business dream through development partnership Skills and Development The knowledge acquired from the training is helping me to better plan, set goals for my business and engage with my customers effectively. The overlock machine has increased the quality of my work. I can now do quality finishing on my products. I even earn some money from my fellow tailors-turned-customers who bring their clothes for overlock. I charge 40-50 shillings for overlocking one piece of cloth. This has guaranteed some level of income alongside the quality of my work. I see myself growing and attracting more customers. My income has improved and I look forward to establishing ‘ Ouya Textiles Company’ in future. Says Ouya. Amos Ouya is a 49-year-old middle-aged tailor from Kisumu. He is married to Monica Atieno and has five children. Mr. Ouya runs a garment making shop at Ekwanda shopping center in Maseno, Kisumu. This business he started in early 2000 having learnt some tailoring skills in primary home science and further acquiring skills in dress making through apprenticeship both in Nairobi and Kisumu. Ouya holds a theology diploma in Bible in Mission from Nairobi Great Commission School. We both run the garment making shop with my wife, who is a KNEC-certified tailor. For many years of practicing garment making, I desired to be a certified tailor to prove my ability given the longstanding experience in this field. Sometimes we joked about it with my wife, who is certified dressmaker…. although I have more experience. Lack of a certificate lowered my self-esteem in negotiating business deals with customers. Thanks to Pamoja for your scholarship program. I sat for my NITA Grade Test III assessment in May 2022 at Mariwa Vocational Training Center and I am determined to further my studies, "says Ouya. Ouya is part of the 118 up-skillers enrolled in the Skills for Jobs (S4J) project for the period, January–April 2022. As an apprentice, he also benefited from Business Finance Management (BFM) training and was awarded a business toolkit of an overlock machine. The overall objective of the S4J project is to improve the employability and economic opportunities of young men and women in Kisumu, Bungoma, and Siaya Counties. The goal of the BFM and soft skills training is to provide participants with practical knowledge and tools in business, finance, and business planning. Ouya currently provides attachment to tailoring and dress making trainees from Mariwa Vocational Training Center. He considers this an opportunity not only for learning by the trainees but platform to enhance publicity of his enterprise. "Thank you to Pamoja, you have made me proud. Keep up the good job and support many to address both technical and capital needs to start or grow their businesses.” More Stories Skills Development Turning the Tides through Development Cooperation Read More Peace and Governance Turning Pain into Peace Read More Skills and Development Hillary Kawa Sore Read More Skills and Development My Move to start own business ignited by Pamoja skills training Read More Skills and Development Pamoja changed my Life Read More Skills and Development Reconnecting to my business dream through development partnership Read More

We acknowledge the interconnectedness of issues and endeavour to bridge all gaps through linkages. About us Measuring Results As a learning organization, Pamoja is keen to find out precisely what impact its projects have. This enables Pamoja to learn from success and failure, plan future projects better and show accountability to the communities it serves as well as to partners and donors. Pamoja learns from its daily work in different ways, for instance by regular review and reflection forums to assess what went well and what could be done better. Over the past years, Pamoja has built a monitoring and results measurement (MRM) system into all its projects. This system measures qualitative and quantitative indicators, covering outputs, outcomes, impact, partners and efficiency. Pamoja received technical support and advise to develop a MRM framework from external MRM advisors. Pamoja works towards aligning its MRM framework to global good-practice standards, such as the Donor Committee on Enterprise Development (DCED) Standards. Transparency Pamoja adheres to the Initiative Transparent Civil Society by Transpareny International. Signatories of the Initiative voluntarily commit to publishing ten pieces of information about their organisation on their website. - P&G Sucess story Felix | Pamoja English
Turning Pain into Peace Twenty six year old Felix Ochieng used to fear election season in Kenya. When he was 11, his brother Moses was almost killed during the post-election violence that broke out after the contested 2007 Kenyan Elections. After the results of the election were announced, the country was ripped apart along ethnic lines. Moses’ neighbours turned against him - they attacked him and burned his house down. He lost everything. “I was not at peace because my brother Moses almost lost his life,” Felix said. The 2022 election season was different for Felix, and for many Kenyans, in what is widely recognized as the most peaceful election in Kenya’s history. Felix was part of that success. Felix and his brother live in Mathare, an informal settlement in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi. In 2022, through USAID Kenya’s Electoral Conflicts Mitigation and Civic Education Support (ECCES) program, We trained Felix as a Peace Ambassador. Felix and other Peace Ambassadors around the country were trained to detect triggers of electoral violence, identify potential hotspots, and respond when a conflict arises. “Now, I have a way to help,” says Felix. He shares his story with others in his neighbourhood and works to prevent youth manipulation and violence by spreading anti-violence messages throughout Mathare . View More
