While this is a certificate course, I find it covering almost half of what we learnt at the university. I love the practical bit and I am inspired to continue to grade II and beyond in the future. This will give me an upper hand to become an examiner for technical training. I am also encouraged to finish my degree. I now have the confidence and am determined to resume my fourth-year studies with the small savings from freelancing and a token of appreciation from the YMCA.” Pamela Adhiambo Get Involved Be the first to know about our projects or programs Email SUBSCRIBE Thanks for subscribing! Our Projects Our Programs Skills and Enterprise Development The program's primary goal is to enhance the economic productivity of disadvantaged women and youth-led micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through various interventions. These interventions include skills development, wealth creation, and promoting resilience and adaptation. To achieve this, the program provides a comprehensive range of support to disadvantaged women and youth. This support includes technical skills training, soft skills development, entrepreneurship knowledge, and assistance with market and financial linkages. By equipping them with these capacities, the program aims to enhance their ability to generate income, create employment opportunities, and support sustainable livelihoods. Learn More Climate Change Resilience Program The programme is premised on an integrated approach that promotes adaptation towards livelihood promotion. the program focuses on value chain development in circular economy, developing capacities of women and youth led SME’s. The program operates at the nexus between policy and action for resilience building and innovation within the green and blue economy value chains. Further, the program integrates and promotes renewable energy technologies in order to foster economic growth, enhance access to resources, affordability, availability towards food security and job opportunities while conserving the natural ecosystem. The program acknowledges that depletion of the natural ecosystem and the climatic changes factors not only disrupts human livelihoods, but also breeds conflicts arising from unsustainable utilization of the environment and it’s attendant resources. Learn More Peace and Governance The overall aim of this program is to contribute to the existence and operationalization of governance framework and practices that safeguard justice, equity, rule of law, inclusivity, cohesion and civic participation. Through the program, we engage in policy influencing, as well as facilitate improved civic engagements and access to justice. This program acts as the fulcrum and equilibrium that provides the impetus and lense for supporting the development and implementation of the climate change and SED programs. The program is premised on the philosophy that; all development needs are conflict context, therefore conscious intergration of peace and development through climate change and SED programming is critical. Interventions are entrenched within the governance structure at the community county and national levels since our interventions compliment and support Government development agenda. Learn More

- My Move to start own business ignited by Pamoja skills training
Although I had known the job, I relied on daily commission from my labour. I was paid a commission of 50 shillings for every shirt I made and 100 shillings for every dress. My Move to start own business ignited by Pamoja skills training Skills and Development At the time of her enrollment in the project, Josphene had been learning tailoring as an apprentice for close to two years. “Although I had known the job, I relied on daily commission from my labour. I was paid a commission of 50 shillings for every shirt I made and 100 shillings for every dress. My commission depended on the availability of customers. I longed to open my own shop but was limited by lack of finance and confidence to make the move. The training on business finance management and soft skills gave me the inspiration and confidence to walk the journey. Lessons on goal setting, entrepreneurship, and business planning gave me the insights to begin the journey," says Josphene. During the BFM and soft skills training, participants are given the opportunity to practice Business Model Canvas (BMC) and business planning with their actual or dream businesses. It is from this kind of practice that Josphene begun visualizing and actualizing her newly desired business move. From the training, Josphene reached out to a friend in need who wanted to sell her old manual sewing machine and, with her little savings, bought the machine through two installments of Ksh. 2,500. Her husband later bought her another second-hand manual sewing machine. Even with the two manual machines, her work output was limited and always interrupted by regular maintenance due to bad condition of the second hand machines. Josphene was awarded a business toolkit of a brand new Singer sewing machine to boost her business operations. "Before, I could only do one dress in a day. However, with the new machine from Pamoja, my work is faster and satisfactorily. I can do more than two dresses in a day. Sincerely, my business has changed. I am on a different growth trajectory. My income has improved. I made an average of 200 shillings before. I now make more than double and am still able to meet my customer's demand for production and comfortably provide space for two trainees on attachment. My only challenge now is the overlocking machine. As a remedy, I just do neat finishing but sometimes pay for overlock services. I am committed to expanding the business and moving from the current container to bigger space. Though I never made it to university, I see this business helping me to educate my children to university and beyond, " says Josphene." Perri successfully sat for her NITA grade III, government trade test and has fully embarked on her Salon. She has also offered an employment opportunity to one of her colleagues from YMCA. She currently sponsors her youngest sibling who is a student at Kisumu Polytechnic “I am very grateful to Pamoja for Transformation and her donor for the opportunity to study and the gift of Hair Drier machine. " "I now have skills in Beauty Therapy and equipped to offer competent services to my clients. I would wish to tell my fellow young people not to wait to be employed. Employment opportunities are quite few, but with our own hands and hard work, we can contribute to create such opportunities for ourselves and others” Beline Perri" More Stories Skills Development Turning the Tides through Development Cooperation Read More Peace and Governance Turning Pain into Peace Read More Skills and Development Hillary Kawa Sore Read More Skills and Development My Move to start own business ignited by Pamoja skills training Read More Skills and Development Pamoja changed my Life Read More Skills and Development Reconnecting to my business dream through development partnership Read More
- CPS: Youth-Led Change: Empowering Communities through Nonviolent Advocacy | Pamoja English
< Back CPS: Youth-Led Change: Empowering Communities through Nonviolent Advocacy Location Kisumu and Bungoma County Location Peace and Governance Youth-Led Change: Empowering Communities through Nonviolent Advocacy Pamoja, in partnership with GIZ-CPS, continues to empower youth across Kenya to become powerful advocates for peace, accountability, and improved service delivery in their communities. Recently, two impactful Youth Sensitization Workshops on Accountability and Service Delivery were held in Kisumu and Bungoma County, bringing together passionate young leaders equipped with nonviolent advocacy skills. Kisumu County: Driving Tangible Improvements The workshop held at Jumuia Hotel, Kisumu County, gathered youth advocates who have undergone intensive nonviolent advocacy training. These young change-makers have since initiated various peaceful actions that have led to real, positive changes in their communities. Key achievements include: Restocking of essential drugs at Nyalenda Health Centre in Kisumu Central Sub-County. Restoration of non-functional security lights in several neighborhoods, enhancing community safety. These youth are now empowered to identify and address local issues independently , without direct support from Pamoja. They have also developed a strategic roadmap to guide future interventions, ensuring sustainable impact across the county. Bungoma County: Building a Culture of Civic Engagement In Bungoma County, the workshop took place at Tourist Hotel, where enthusiastic youth advocates convened to deepen their understanding of nonviolent civic engagement. The participants, trained in advocacy techniques, are now leading efforts to tackle pressing community concerns. Notable outcomes include: The County Government of Bungoma, under the Department of Environment, Tourism, Water, and Climate, has acknowledged and agreed to adopt the youth-led approach to waste management in Cheptais and Malakisi , which involved engaging traders and locals to highlight challenges and escalate solutions to other markets. Repairs of a dilapidated road in Buluma Sub-County are currently underway following a memorandum submitted by youth advocates to the County Government. Like their peers in Kisumu, the Bungoma youth advocates are now well-equipped to identify and address community issues autonomously. They too have developed a county-wide strategic roadmap to continue driving meaningful change. A New Generation of Peace & Accountability Champions Through these initiatives, Pamoja and GIZ-CPS are proving that when equipped with the right tools and mindset, youth can be powerful agents of transformation. Their work is not only improving service delivery but also strengthening trust between citizens and government institutions. We celebrate the resilience, creativity, and commitment of the youth in Kisumu and Bungoma. Together, they are building safer, more accountable, and inclusive communities — one peaceful action at a time. #YouthLeadChange #NonviolentAdvocacy #PeaceAndAccountability For more information about the RPS Program or how you can support similar initiatives, contact: info@pamoja-transformation.org Pamoja for Transformation Team Kisumu, Kakamega, Vihiga, Siaya, and Bungoma. - Skills for Jobs | Pamoja English
< Back Skills for Jobs Location Western, Coast, Central Kenya Location Skills and Enterprise Development Facts Region: Western, Coast, Central Kenya Period: 2018 - 2022 Donors: atDta Foundation, Christian Martin Foundation, Mariano Foundation, Tarom Foundation, associations and individuals Context SMEs have been facing unprecedented income losses and uncertainties about their future because of business disruptions due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Most SMEs do not have financial reserves to meet expenses during emergencies. It also emerged that many Kenyans do not make savings with only 39% of Kenyans have set aside funds to manage emergencies that arise from loss of income. Deepening income inequality and entrenched regional disparities hinder inclusive economic growth. Youth unemployment rate in Kenya avrages at 35%. Poor women and youth lack skills and access to capital and markets to grow a business and create jobs. Project aim Violence-affected and low-skilled women and young people are enabled to grow their existing small businesses, raise their income, build a livelihood for themselves and their families, and create employment opportunities for others. Strategy The project provides women and young people with the business skills, networks, capital and self-confidence they need to run sustainable, income-earning businesses. The project overall objective is improving employment and economic opportunities for marginalized and vulnerable youth in Kisumu, Siaya and Bungoma County. It seeks to achieve this objective through collaboration with both the public and private sectors. The project's specific focus is on providing employability skills and support to access internship and job opportunities for 1,900 vulnerable and marginalized youth. To accomplish this, the project will utilize Basic Skills Training, which will be conducted in seven vocational training centers. By offering vocational/technical skills training, the project aims to equip youth with the necessary skills and competencies required for employment. These skills may include technical skills relevant to specific industries, as well as soft skills like communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management. Additionally, the project intends to facilitate access to internship and job opportunities for the trained youth. This could involve establishing partnerships with local businesses, organizations, and employers to create pathways for youth to gain practical experience and secure employment. The project may provide support in terms of job placement services, networking opportunities, and career guidance to help the youth navigate the job market successfully. Through this project, marginalized and vulnerable youth in the three Counties will have improved access to training, skill development, and employment opportunities. By enhancing their employability, the project seeks to empower youth to overcome barriers and achieve economic independence, ultimately contributing to their overall well-being and the socio-economic development of the region. Achievements in 2017 262 women and youth attended trainings and coaching sessions at which they learned about business and financial management, marketing, and communication. 38 small enterprises, farms and production sites received loans for business expansion. 95% business loan repayment rate. 32 stable new full-time jobs were created. 85% of women report more effective financial management within business and at home. Women business owners and employees report increased joint financial decision-making at household level. Kisumu, Kakamega, Vihiga, Siaya, and Bungoma.
