Turning Pain into Peace Peace and Governance Twenty six year old Felix Ochieng used to fear election season in Kenya. When he was 11, his brother Moses was almost killed during the post-election violence that broke out after the contested 2007 Kenyan Elections. After the results of the election were announced, the country was ripped apart along ethnic lines. Moses’ neighbours turned against him - they attacked him and burned his house down. He lost everything." I was not at peace because my brother Moses almost lost his life,” Felix said. The 2022 election season was different for Felix, and for many Kenyans, in what is widely recognized as the most peaceful election in Kenya’s history. Felix was part of that success. Felix and his brother live in Mathare, an informal settlement in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi. In 2022, through USAID Kenya’s Electoral Conflicts Mitigation and Civic Education Support (ECCES) program, We trained Felix as a Peace Ambassador. Felix and other Peace Ambassadors around the country were trained to detect triggers of electoral violence, identify potential hotspots, and respond when a conflict arises. "Now, I have a way to help,” says Felix. He shares his story with others in his neighbourhood and works to prevent youth manipulation and violence by spreading anti-violence messages throughout Mathare https://www.usaid.gov/kenya/news/nov-21-2022-turning-pain-peace More Stories Skills Development Turning the Tides through Development Cooperation Read More Peace and Governance Turning Pain into Peace Read More Skills and Development Hillary Kawa Sore Read More Skills and Development My Move to start own business ignited by Pamoja skills training Read More Skills and Development Pamoja changed my Life Read More Skills and Development Reconnecting to my business dream through development partnership Read More
- Enhancing Youth and Women Access to Land for Sustainable Economic Development in Western Kenya | Pamoja English
< Back Enhancing Youth and Women Access to Land for Sustainable Economic Development in Western Kenya Location Kakamega County Location Peace and Governance and Climate Resilience Empowering Youth and Women: P4T and GFA Conduct Land Access Training Workshop for Community Change Agents and Farmers Service Centers Bukura, Kenya - In a significant step toward boosting agricultural development and empowering marginalized groups, P4T, in collaboration with GFA under the Agri-Jobs for Youth initiative, successfully conducted an awareness and sensitization training workshop at Bukura Agricultural Training Center (ATC). The one-day awareness and sensitization session brought together Community Change Agents (CCAs) and Farmers Service Centers (FSCs) from the five project counties: Kisumu, Kakamega, Siaya, Vihiga, and Bungoma. The workshop focused on strengthening the capacity of CCAs and FSCs with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively facilitate community sensitization and awareness forums on land access. The primary focus of these forums will be to address the challenges faced by youth and women in accessing land for agricultural activities, ultimately aiming to increase their participation and productivity in the sector. This training is a vital precursor to the intergenerational dialogues already initiated by the project team. By empowering local community agents with information and sensitization techniques, P4T and GFA are fostering a grassroots movement to address land access issues. The expectation is that well-informed CCAs and FSCs will be instrumental in creating awareness and paving the way for constructive dialogues that can lead to tangible improvements in land access for young people and women in the region. This initiative emphasizes the commitment of P4T and GFA to not only create job opportunities in agriculture for the youth but also to address the fundamental issue of land access, which is often a significant barrier to entry and success in the agricultural sector, particularly for women and youths. The impact of this training is expected to foster greater equity and increased agricultural output across the five counties. - Empowering Youth and Women Through Land Access: Intergenerational Dialogues in Western Kenya | Pamoja English
< Back Empowering Youth and Women Through Land Access: Intergenerational Dialogues in Western Kenya Location Kisumu, Kakamega, Vihiga, Siaya, and Bungoma. Location Climate Resilience and Peace and Governance Empowering Youth and Women Through Land Access: Intergenerational Dialogues in Western Kenya. In recent weeks, P4T in collaboration with Community Change Agents (CCAs/FSCs) under the GFA-under the GIZ Agri-jobs 4 youth projec t, has been actively conducting sensitization campaigns and intergenerational dialogue forums across five counties in Western Kenya — Kisumu, Kakamega, Vihiga, Siaya, and Bungoma. The primary goal of these engagements is to improve access to land for women and youth, enabling them to participate more fully in agricultural production. The forums have brought to light various dynamics surrounding land access, including systemic barriers that prevent young people and women from securing full control and ownership of land — challenges that continue to limit their potential in the agricultural sector. Through the Intergenerational Dialogues approach, the project has laid a strong foundation for improved land tenure security. These dialogues foster greater understanding and cooperation between farmers and landowners, while also promoting community-driven solutions tailored to local contexts. Encouragingly, early results show that a number of farmers and landowners have already taken steps to formalize their land lease agreements, signaling a promising shift toward more equitable and secure land access. This initiative not only supports economic empowerment but also contributes to long-term food security and rural transformation in Western Kenya. #landrights #youthinagriculture #womenempowerment #p4timpact #foodsecuri ty #communitydevelopment For more updates, stay tuned to our news section! Development of aTechnical and Business Development Services Curriculum (BDS) for Capacity Building/ Training Improved Cookstove Entrepreneurs and its value chains The project “Promotion of Climate-Friendly Cooking: Kenya and Senegal” (GCF/EnDev) , co-financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), Kenya’s Ministry of Energy and Petroleum (MoEP), and Senegal’s Ministry of Petroleum and Energy and Ministry of the Environment and Forestry that commenced at the end March 2020 until September 2025. The Kenyan component of this project, GCF/EnDev Kenya, builds on EnDev Kenya’s experiences in the cooking energy sector. The project is implementing an innovative Improved Cookstoves (ICS) market transformation strategy in Kenya, and further improving global knowledge about ICS sector contribution to Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). It is expected to significantly increase the number of ICS users in Kenya particularly in peri-urban and rural areas. Similarly, the project is expected to limit the consumption of non-renewable biomass in the cooking sector compared to the baseline situation, leading to greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions. The project objective is to accelerate the growth of the ICS sector with an irreversible market transformation that will significantly increase the level of ICS production and sales, particularly in more remote and rural locations, thereby enabling Kenya to significantly advance the achievement of the stated NDC goals. The need for survival led him to engage in casual jobs to earn a living, at local building sites (mjengo) as a helper, as a tout, at car washes as an attendant and as a casual laborer in small restaurants within Nairobi city. Pamoja changed my Life Skills and Development The need for survival led him to engage in casual jobs to earn a living, at local building sites (mjengo) as a helper, as a tout at the local matatu industry (plying Kahawa West –Nairobi City route), at car washes as an attendant and as a casual laborer in small restaurants within Nairobi city. It is from such engagement that he developed a passion for cooking through his experiences in working at hotels and eateries though his financial and social circumstances however could not allow him to act beyond his desired goal to be a chef.Samuel learnt about the skills for jobs sponsorship through an advert that was forwarded online by a close relative. After application he was lucky to be on-boarded under the Novice Cohort-I category at NITA-Kisumu to pursue a short-term course in food and beverage production between January–April 2022. The training offered Sam practical and theoretical skills in food and beverage production that has equipped him with a range of knowledge and understanding, skills and techniques, personal qualities and attributes essential for successful performance in the food service industry. Samuel also benefited from Soft skills and career readiness training that prepared him not only to think creatively and acquire basics skills in entrepreneurship, but also promoted his overall future career performance, career advancement and retention. In April 2022 Sam successfully sat for his NITA grade III government trade test examinations. Through the project’s skills matching approach Samuel eventually managed to secure a placement opportunity at EKA hotel in Nairobi as an intern assisting in food production department. The internship position offers a small monthly stipend which he partly uses to cater for his daily needs, and support his family whenever possible. The hotel management recently approached him with an offer for employment. “My self-esteem is over the roof. I remain grateful for the support I’ve received from Pamoja for transformation that has offered me this new lease of life. My parents and family are also happy and encouraged with my performance. My supervisor is also happy with my work which has motivated me to commence setting some money aside that will help me sponsor myself for NITA grade II government trade test. My dream is to become a professional chef in a five-star hotel and support my family. From now on my life can never be viewed with the same lens again. I encourage my fellow youth to never give up in life, to look out for and explore all available avenues to take up skills training and to always work hard.” Says Samuel Ochieng." Samuel Ochieng or Sam, as he is often referred has experienced a fair share of struggles throughout a better part of his life. Through much effort, Sam managed to complete his secondary education in 2018 that came by with much support from the local CDF’s bursary funding. His family could however not afford to support his college education for lack of money and competing family demands. For 4 years, he struggled to make ends meet and alleviate the challenges of his life.
