Click Here Enumerators during the Training Enhancing Youth and Women’s Access to Land for Sustainable Economic Development in Western Kenya. Project Overview Land access remains a critical challenge for women and youth in Western Kenya, hindered by socio-cultural norms, economic barriers, and weak legal frameworks. Patriarchal land tenure systems often exclude women from ownership, while intergenerational power dynamics marginalize youth. High land prices, exploitative leases, and limited dispute-resolution mechanisms further restrict equitable access. To address these challenges, GFA Consulting Group, in partnership with Pamoja under the GIZ Agri-Jobs 4 Youth Initiative, is implementing a 12-month project across Kisumu, Vihiga, Siaya, Kakamega, and Bungoma counties. The initiative focuses on strengthening land access for women and youth in key agricultural value chains: Poultry, Azolla farming, African Leafy Vegetables (ALVs), and Soybeans. Key Project Interventions 1. Baseline Survey & Data-Driven Planning A two-day enumerators’ workshop at Vittoria Suites, Kisumu, equipped researchers with skills to conduct a baseline survey on land ownership dynamics. The findings will inform evidence-based interventions to improve land access policies and practices. The primary objective of the training was to familiarize the enumerators with the project goals and equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to conduct data collection to inform evidence-based project implementation. 2. Promoting Sustainable Farming Innovations The project supports climate-smart agriculture, including Azolla farming—a protein-rich livestock feed supplement. A field visit to an innovative Azolla farmer in Sabatia, Vihiga, demonstrated its potential to reduce feed costs while boosting poultry, pig, and fish production. 3. Empowering Community Advocates 20 Community Change Advocates (CCAs) underwent a 5-day intensive training on land laws, paralegal support, and dialogue facilitation. These advocates now lead intergenerational dialogues to bridge gaps between elders and youth on land rights. A one-day sensitization workshop at Bukura Agricultural Training Center (ATC) strengthened the capacity of Farmers Service Centers (FSCs) to conduct awareness campaigns on equitable land access. Expected Impact By tackling legal, economic, and cultural barriers, the project will: ✅ Increase women and youth’s participation in agriculture. ✅ Improve land leasing and ownership opportunities. ✅ Strengthen community-based dispute resolution mechanisms. ✅ Boost productivity in poultry, Azolla, ALVs, and soybeans—enhancing food security and incomes. Harnessing the Power of the Ocean for Sustainable Growth The project was implemented as a component of the European Union (EU) “Coastal Economic Development in Kenya” Programme, a partnership between the EU and the Government of Kenya (GoK) aimed at advancing the blue economy agenda through coastal development initiatives. This specific initiative focused on seaweed, a nutrient-rich aquatic plant often referred to as marine algae. Seaweed grows in oceans, seas, and freshwater bodies and plays a critical role in marine ecosystems by providing food, shelter, and oxygen. Pamoja for Transformation conducted seaweed training sessions along Kenya’s coast. These comprehensive training programs were designed to build and promote expertise in sustainable seaweed farming. By equipping participants with practical skills and knowledge, the training aimed to: Boost Food Production: Highlighted the potential of seaweed as a highly nutritious and sustainable food source. Provide Cash Crop Opportunities: Empowered coastal communities with an alternative, profitable farming venture to enhance economic resilience. Enhance Socio-Economic Welfare: Facilitated the creation of employment opportunities and improved livelihoods through sustainable seaweed farming. Promote Environmental Stewardship: Educated beneficiaries on sustainable resource management and biodiversity conservation to protect marine ecosystems. Our Projects Our Programs Skills and Enterprise Development The program's primary goal is to enhance the economic productivity of disadvantaged women and youth-led micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through various interventions. These interventions include skills development, wealth creation, and promoting resilience and adaptation. To achieve this, the program provides a comprehensive range of support to disadvantaged women and youth. This support includes technical skills training, soft skills development, entrepreneurship knowledge, and assistance with market and financial linkages. By equipping them with these capacities, the program aims to enhance their ability to generate income, create employment opportunities, and support sustainable livelihoods. Learn More Climate Change Resilience Program The programme is premised on an integrated approach that promotes adaptation towards livelihood promotion. the program focuses on value chain development in circular economy, developing capacities of women and youth led SME’s. The program operates at the nexus between policy and action for resilience building and innovation within the green and blue economy value chains. Further, the program integrates and promotes renewable energy technologies in order to foster economic growth, enhance access to resources, affordability, availability towards food security and job opportunities while conserving the natural ecosystem. The program acknowledges that depletion of the natural ecosystem and the climatic changes factors not only disrupts human livelihoods, but also breeds conflicts arising from unsustainable utilization of the environment and it’s attendant resources. The objective is to support innovative and resilient farming methods to improve food security and contribute to economic and livelihood development. The young people in particular who are more energized and creative have been given platforms through which they can develop farming structures and increase production.

Building the Resilience of Small Sized Aquaculture Enterprises Through Entrepreneurial, Financial and Business Management Training This project comes against the backdrop of efforts made by the county government of Homabay and ABDP- (Aquaculture Business Development Program) to promote the adoption of climate-resilient practices in fostering expansion of aquaculture as a way to reduce overdependence on capture fisheries and improve income and create jobs to women and youths in Homabay county. This targets to build capacity on business and technical aquaculture of 30 aquaculture farmers of Kadongo self Help Group to spur economic well-being and environmental conservation.

< Back Skills for Jobs Location Western, Coast, Central Kenya Location Skills and Enterprise Development Facts Region: Western, Coast, Central Kenya Period: 2018 - 2022 Donors: atDta Foundation, Christian Martin Foundation, Mariano Foundation, Tarom Foundation, associations and individuals Context SMEs have been facing unprecedented income losses and uncertainties about their future because of business disruptions due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Most SMEs do not have financial reserves to meet expenses during emergencies. It also emerged that many Kenyans do not make savings with only 39% of Kenyans have set aside funds to manage emergencies that arise from loss of income. Deepening income inequality and entrenched regional disparities hinder inclusive economic growth. Youth unemployment rate in Kenya avrages at 35%. Poor women and youth lack skills and access to capital and markets to grow a business and create jobs. Project aim Violence-affected and low-skilled women and young people are enabled to grow their existing small businesses, raise their income, build a livelihood for themselves and their families, and create employment opportunities for others. Strategy The project provides women and young people with the business skills, networks, capital and self-confidence they need to run sustainable, income-earning businesses. The project overall objective is improving employment and economic opportunities for marginalized and vulnerable youth in Kisumu, Siaya and Bungoma County. It seeks to achieve this objective through collaboration with both the public and private sectors. The project's specific focus is on providing employability skills and support to access internship and job opportunities for 1,900 vulnerable and marginalized youth. To accomplish this, the project will utilize Basic Skills Training, which will be conducted in seven vocational training centers. By offering vocational/technical skills training, the project aims to equip youth with the necessary skills and competencies required for employment. These skills may include technical skills relevant to specific industries, as well as soft skills like communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management. Additionally, the project intends to facilitate access to internship and job opportunities for the trained youth. This could involve establishing partnerships with local businesses, organizations, and employers to create pathways for youth to gain practical experience and secure employment. The project may provide support in terms of job placement services, networking opportunities, and career guidance to help the youth navigate the job market successfully. Through this project, marginalized and vulnerable youth in the three Counties will have improved access to training, skill development, and employment opportunities. By enhancing their employability, the project seeks to empower youth to overcome barriers and achieve economic independence, ultimately contributing to their overall well-being and the socio-economic development of the region. Achievements in 2017 262 women and youth attended trainings and coaching sessions at which they learned about business and financial management, marketing, and communication. 38 small enterprises, farms and production sites received loans for business expansion. 95% business loan repayment rate. 32 stable new full-time jobs were created. 85% of women report more effective financial management within business and at home.
