- Reconnecting to my business dream through development partnership
The knowledge acquired from the training is helping me to better plan, set goals for my business and engage with my customers effectively. Reconnecting to my business dream through development partnership Skills and Development The knowledge acquired from the training is helping me to better plan, set goals for my business and engage with my customers effectively. The overlock machine has increased the quality of my work. I can now do quality finishing on my products. I even earn some money from my fellow tailors-turned-customers who bring their clothes for overlock. I charge 40-50 shillings for overlocking one piece of cloth. This has guaranteed some level of income alongside the quality of my work. I see myself growing and attracting more customers. My income has improved and I look forward to establishing ‘ Ouya Textiles Company’ in future. Says Ouya. Amos Ouya is a 49-year-old middle-aged tailor from Kisumu. He is married to Monica Atieno and has five children. Mr. Ouya runs a garment making shop at Ekwanda shopping center in Maseno, Kisumu. This business he started in early 2000 having learnt some tailoring skills in primary home science and further acquiring skills in dress making through apprenticeship both in Nairobi and Kisumu. Ouya holds a theology diploma in Bible in Mission from Nairobi Great Commission School. We both run the garment making shop with my wife, who is a KNEC-certified tailor. For many years of practicing garment making, I desired to be a certified tailor to prove my ability given the longstanding experience in this field. Sometimes we joked about it with my wife, who is certified dressmaker…. although I have more experience. Lack of a certificate lowered my self-esteem in negotiating business deals with customers. Thanks to Pamoja for your scholarship program. I sat for my NITA Grade Test III assessment in May 2022 at Mariwa Vocational Training Center and I am determined to further my studies, "says Ouya. Ouya is part of the 118 up-skillers enrolled in the Skills for Jobs (S4J) project for the period, January–April 2022. As an apprentice, he also benefited from Business Finance Management (BFM) training and was awarded a business toolkit of an overlock machine. The overall objective of the S4J project is to improve the employability and economic opportunities of young men and women in Kisumu, Bungoma, and Siaya Counties. The goal of the BFM and soft skills training is to provide participants with practical knowledge and tools in business, finance, and business planning. Ouya currently provides attachment to tailoring and dress making trainees from Mariwa Vocational Training Center. He considers this an opportunity not only for learning by the trainees but platform to enhance publicity of his enterprise. "Thank you to Pamoja, you have made me proud. Keep up the good job and support many to address both technical and capital needs to start or grow their businesses.” More Stories Skills Development Turning the Tides through Development Cooperation Read More Peace and Governance Turning Pain into Peace Read More Skills and Development Hillary Kawa Sore Read More Skills and Development My Move to start own business ignited by Pamoja skills training Read More Skills and Development Pamoja changed my Life Read More Skills and Development Reconnecting to my business dream through development partnership Read More

Click Here Enumerators during the Training Enhancing Youth and Women’s Access to Land for Sustainable Economic Development in Western Kenya. Project Overview Land access remains a critical challenge for women and youth in Western Kenya, hindered by socio-cultural norms, economic barriers, and weak legal frameworks. Patriarchal land tenure systems often exclude women from ownership, while intergenerational power dynamics marginalize youth. High land prices, exploitative leases, and limited dispute-resolution mechanisms further restrict equitable access. To address these challenges, GFA Consulting Group, in partnership with Pamoja under the GIZ Agri-Jobs 4 Youth Initiative, is implementing a 12-month project across Kisumu, Vihiga, Siaya, Kakamega, and Bungoma counties. The initiative focuses on strengthening land access for women and youth in key agricultural value chains: Poultry, Azolla farming, African Leafy Vegetables (ALVs), and Soybeans. Key Project Interventions 1. Baseline Survey & Data-Driven Planning A two-day enumerators’ workshop at Vittoria Suites, Kisumu, equipped researchers with skills to conduct a baseline survey on land ownership dynamics. The findings will inform evidence-based interventions to improve land access policies and practices. The primary objective of the training was to familiarize the enumerators with the project goals and equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to conduct data collection to inform evidence-based project implementation. 2. Promoting Sustainable Farming Innovations The project supports climate-smart agriculture, including Azolla farming—a protein-rich livestock feed supplement. A field visit to an innovative Azolla farmer in Sabatia, Vihiga, demonstrated its potential to reduce feed costs while boosting poultry, pig, and fish production. 3. Empowering Community Advocates 20 Community Change Advocates (CCAs) underwent a 5-day intensive training on land laws, paralegal support, and dialogue facilitation. These advocates now lead intergenerational dialogues to bridge gaps between elders and youth on land rights. A one-day sensitization workshop at Bukura Agricultural Training Center (ATC) strengthened the capacity of Farmers Service Centers (FSCs) to conduct awareness campaigns on equitable land access. Expected Impact By tackling legal, economic, and cultural barriers, the project will: ✅ Increase women and youth’s participation in agriculture. ✅ Improve land leasing and ownership opportunities. ✅ Strengthen community-based dispute resolution mechanisms. ✅ Boost productivity in poultry, Azolla, ALVs, and soybeans—enhancing food security and incomes. This initiative is a step toward inclusive agricultural growth in Western Kenya. Follow our progress as we empower women and youth to unlock their full potential in farming.
