Bungoma and Kisumu Youth Advocacy Champions Drive Dialogue for Improved Public Sanitation and Security

Bungoma County – May 28, 2025

Markets and urban centers require strong leadership to address challenges affecting traders and consumers. Key amenities such as dumping sites, public toilets, and sanitation facilities are critical for public health, yet many growing towns still lack them.

To tackle this, Bungoma Youth Advocacy Champions on Governance, with support from P4T under the GIZ-CPS Project, facilitated a dialogue between County Duty Bearers and Business Community Leaders from Cheptais and Malakisi markets in Cheptais and Sirisia Sub-Counties. The meeting, held at Sirigreen Villa & Resort, aimed to assess the state of business environments and identify urgent solutions for improving sanitation services.

Key attendees included:

  • Mr. Nicholas Kiboi (Chief Officer, Environment, Climate Change & Tourism)

  • Director of Trade, Energy, and Markets

  • County Public Health Office representatives

The discussion highlighted gaps in sanitation infrastructure and emphasized the need for immediate action to enhance hygiene and market conditions.

Kisumu County Takes Steps to Enhance Security Lighting

Kisumu County – May 29, 2025

In related initiative, a youth-led service delivery dialogue in Kisumu County was held at Pinecone Hotel, the forum brought together stakeholders including:

  • County Departments of Energy, Transport & Infrastructure

  • Sub-County Administrators (Kisumu Central & Kisumu East)

  • Kenya Power & Lighting Company (KPLC) Western Chapter

  • CSOs, Traders, Pamoja Accountability Advocates, and Women & Youth Representatives

The dialogue focused on the non-functional street lighting system in key markets and roads, which has raised security concerns. Stakeholders committed to:

  • Restoring and maintaining streetlights

  • Enhancing community vigilance to prevent vandalism

  • Strengthening governance and public participation in service delivery

Both engagements underscore the power of collaborative governance in addressing pressing urban challenges. By fostering accountability and community involvement, these initiatives pave the way for sustainable improvements in sanitation, security, and overall service delivery.
