Click Here Enumerators during the Training Enhancing Youth and Women’s Access to Land for Sustainable Economic Development in Western Kenya. Project Overview Land access remains a critical challenge for women and youth in Western Kenya, hindered by socio-cultural norms, economic barriers, and weak legal frameworks. Patriarchal land tenure systems often exclude women from ownership, while intergenerational power dynamics marginalize youth. High land prices, exploitative leases, and limited dispute-resolution mechanisms further restrict equitable access. To address these challenges, GFA Consulting Group, in partnership with Pamoja under the GIZ Agri-Jobs 4 Youth Initiative, is implementing a 12-month project across Kisumu, Vihiga, Siaya, Kakamega, and Bungoma counties. The initiative focuses on strengthening land access for women and youth in key agricultural value chains: Poultry, Azolla farming, African Leafy Vegetables (ALVs), and Soybeans. Key Project Interventions 1. Baseline Survey & Data-Driven Planning A two-day enumerators’ workshop at Vittoria Suites, Kisumu, equipped researchers with skills to conduct a baseline survey on land ownership dynamics. The findings will inform evidence-based interventions to improve land access policies and practices. The primary objective of the training was to familiarize the enumerators with the project goals and equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to conduct data collection to inform evidence-based project implementation. 2. Promoting Sustainable Farming Innovations The project supports climate-smart agriculture, including Azolla farming—a protein-rich livestock feed supplement. A field visit to an innovative Azolla farmer in Sabatia, Vihiga, demonstrated its potential to reduce feed costs while boosting poultry, pig, and fish production. 3. Empowering Community Advocates 20 Community Change Advocates (CCAs) underwent a 5-day intensive training on land laws, paralegal support, and dialogue facilitation. These advocates now lead intergenerational dialogues to bridge gaps between elders and youth on land rights. A one-day sensitization workshop at Bukura Agricultural Training Center (ATC) strengthened the capacity of Farmers Service Centers (FSCs) to conduct awareness campaigns on equitable land access. Expected Impact By tackling legal, economic, and cultural barriers, the project will: ✅ Increase women and youth’s participation in agriculture. ✅ Improve land leasing and ownership opportunities. ✅ Strengthen community-based dispute resolution mechanisms. ✅ Boost productivity in poultry, Azolla, ALVs, and soybeans—enhancing food security and incomes. This initiative is a step toward inclusive agricultural growth in Western Kenya. Follow our progress as we empower women and youth to unlock their full potential in farming. Donor: Danish International Development Agency - DANIDA CONTEXT In Kisumu county, the large numbers of unemployed youth lack access to economic opportunities as well as opportunities to participate in dialogue on issues affecting their communities. Women remain largely excluded from playing an active role in conflict resolution processes. PROJECT AIM The project aims at transforming violent conflicts among the youth at risk by fostering their integration into the community and reducing violent gang and extremist activities that undermine community safety. Enhance communication, collaboration and trust between the police, the county government, local politicians, the civil society and youth at risk of violence and crime. • My Move to start own business ignited by Pamoja skills training

Although I had known the job, I relied on daily commission from my labour. I was paid a commission of 50 shillings for every shirt I made and 100 shillings for every dress. My Move to start own business ignited by Pamoja skills training Skills and Development At the time of her enrollment in the project, Josphene had been learning tailoring as an apprentice for close to two years. “Although I had known the job, I relied on daily commission from my labour. I was paid a commission of 50 shillings for every shirt I made and 100 shillings for every dress. My commission depended on the availability of customers. I longed to open my own shop but was limited by lack of finance and confidence to make the move. The training on business finance management and soft skills gave me the inspiration and confidence to walk the journey. Lessons on goal setting, entrepreneurship, and business planning gave me the insights to begin the journey," says Josphene. During the BFM and soft skills training, participants are given the opportunity to practice Business Model Canvas (BMC) and business planning with their actual or dream businesses. It is from this kind of practice that Josphene begun visualizing and actualizing her newly desired business move. From the training, Josphene reached out to a friend in need who wanted to sell her old manual sewing machine and, with her little savings, bought the machine through two installments of Ksh. 2,500. Her husband later bought her another second-hand manual sewing machine. Even with the two manual machines, her work output was limited and always interrupted by regular maintenance due to bad condition of the second hand machines. Josphene was awarded a business toolkit of a brand new Singer sewing machine to boost her business operations. "Before, I could only do one dress in a day. However, with the new machine from Pamoja, my work is faster and satisfactorily. I can do more than two dresses in a day. Sincerely, my business has changed. I am on a different growth trajectory. My income has improved. I made an average of 200 shillings before. I now make more than double and am still able to meet my customer's demand for production and comfortably provide space for two trainees on attachment. My only challenge now is the overlocking machine. As a remedy, I just do neat finishing but sometimes pay for overlock services. I am committed to expanding the business and moving from the current container to bigger space. Though I never made it to university, I see this business helping me to educate my children to university and beyond, " says Josphene." Perri successfully sat for her NITA grade III, government trade test and has fully embarked on her Salon. She has also offered an employment opportunity to one of her colleagues from YMCA. She currently sponsors her youngest sibling who is a student at Kisumu Polytechnic “I am very grateful to Pamoja for Transformation and her donor for the opportunity to study and the gift of Hair Drier machine. " "I now have skills in Beauty Therapy and equipped to offer competent services to my clients. I would wish to tell my fellow young people not to wait to be employed. Employment opportunities are quite few, but with our own hands and hard work, we can contribute to create such opportunities for ourselves and others” Beline Perri" More Stories Skills Development Turning the Tides through Development Cooperation Read More Peace and Governance Turning Pain into Peace Read More Skills and Development Hillary Kawa Sore Read More Skills and Development My Move to start own business ignited by Pamoja skills training Read More Skills and Development Pamoja changed my Life Read More Skills and Development Reconnecting to my business dream through development partnership Read More

Turning Pain into Peace Peace and Governance Twenty six year old Felix Ochieng used to fear election season in Kenya. When he was 11, his brother Moses was almost killed during the post-election violence that broke out after the contested 2007 Kenyan Elections. After the results of the election were announced, the country was ripped apart along ethnic lines. Moses’ neighbours turned against him - they attacked him and burned his house down. He lost everything." I was not at peace because my brother Moses almost lost his life,” Felix said. The 2022 election season was different for Felix, and for many Kenyans, in what is widely recognized as the most peaceful election in Kenya’s history. Felix was part of that success. Felix and his brother live in Mathare, an informal settlement in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi. In 2022, through USAID Kenya’s Electoral Conflicts Mitigation and Civic Education Support (ECCES) program, We trained Felix as a Peace Ambassador. Felix and other Peace Ambassadors around the country were trained to detect triggers of electoral violence, identify potential hotspots, and respond when a conflict arises. "Now, I have a way to help,” says Felix. He shares his story with others in his neighbourhood and works to prevent youth manipulation and violence by spreading anti-violence messages throughout Mathare https://www.usaid.gov/kenya/news/nov-21-2022-turning-pain-peace More Stories Skills Development Turning the Tides through Development Cooperation Read More Peace and Governance Turning Pain into Peace Read More Skills and Development Hillary Kawa Sore Read More Skills and Development My Move to start own business ignited by Pamoja skills training Read More Skills and Development Pamoja changed my Life Read More Skills and Development Reconnecting to my business dream through development partnership Read More
